Registering to Vote



In order to vote in any election held in Des Moines County, you must be registered to vote in this county.

*Please note you must submit this form in person or via mail.

You may register to vote in Des Moines County, Iowa if:
  • You are a citizen of the United States
  • You are a resident of Iowa
  • You are a resident of Des Moines County
  • You are at least 17 1/2 years of age or older
    • Note: You must be at least 18 years old to vote
  • You have not lost your right to vote due to a felony conviction
  • You have not been judged "mentally incompetent" by a court
  • You have not claimed the right to vote in more than one place



You must provide the following information: 
  • Your IA driver's license number or last 4 digits of your social security number
  • Your full name
  • Your date of birth
  • Your residence address
  • Your name and address as given on your last registration (if applicable)




You may decline to give the following information:
  • Your political party preference
  • Your telephone number
  • Your social security number

WARNING: You can be convicted and fined up to $7,500.00 and/or jailed for up to five years for false information.



Election Day Registration (EDR) 

  • As of January 1, 2008, Iowa law allows you to register to vote on Election Day at the polling place for the precinct you currently live in. After showing proof of residence and proof of identity, you may register and vote at the precinct the same day.

Deadline for registering to vote:

  • 10 Days before General Elections which will be a Saturday.
    • The Election Department/Auditor's Office will be open from 8 AM to 5 PM on that Saturday.
  • 11 Days before all other Elections which will be a Friday.
    • The Election Department/Auditor's Office will be open normal weekday hours from 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Registration forms which are postmarked 15 or more days before an election are considered on time even if received after the deadline.
