Internships

Undergraduate Internship Program

The Des Moines County Attorney's Office periodically welcomes college students to intern with our office. We are looking for students dedicated to the highest degree of professionalism. If you are interested in employment as a prosecutor, victim service professional, law enforcement, or curious about how our criminal justice system works, interning is a great way to gain insight in these fields.
An internship with our office provides hands-on experience in the prosecution field. The intern will work with the assistant county attorneys and victim services, and will become familiar with the criminal justice system. The intern will attend criminal court proceedings, tour correctional facilities, help with victim services, and many other duties as assigned.

Law Student Prosecutor Internship

The Des Moines County Attorney’s Office participates in the Iowa Attorney General’s prosecution internship program with both the University of Iowa College of Law and Drake University Law School. This program is for students who have completed two years of law school, the requisite courses and the certification course. The prosecuting intern acts with limited license to practice law and represent the State in criminal prosecutions under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney.

The prosecuting intern position provides the opportunity for someone interested in becoming a prosecutor the real world experience of handing criminal cases. During the ten-week course, the prosecuting intern is responsible for prosecuting simple misdemeanor/traffic offenses. They will also appear in Associate District Court for routine hearings. Most of our interns have had the opportunity to handle at least one jury trial during their internship. Finally, they may be assigned various research tasks to assist either the County Attorney or the assistant county attorneys.
