Tax Department Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Collecting all property and mobile home taxes, special assessments, and drainage tax
  • Collecting miscellaneous revenue from other offices
  • Investing all county funds
  • Apportioning all tax dollars and sending to appropriate school, city, or other taxing body
  • Issuing tax clearances on mobile homes
  • Processing Property Tax Credit Claims for senior citizens or persons with disabilities
  • Keeping accurate records of all monies received and disbursed
  • Holding the annual Tax Sale

Tax Timeline

July
  • Beginning of fiscal year.
August
  • Fiscal year property taxes are certified.
  • Mailing of property and mobile home taxes, special assessments and drainage taxes.
September
  • First half property taxes due September 1; delinquent after September 30, unless that day falls on Saturday or Sunday, then delinquent after first business day in October.
October
  • First half property taxes delinquent as of October 1, unless September 30 deadline was a Saturday or Sunday, then taxes not delinquent until 2nd business day in October. Interest accrues at the rate of 1.5% per month (rounded to nearest dollar - $1 minimum).
November
  • Delinquent notices are mailed to property owners with outstanding September taxes.
  • November 15 - Tax sale investors may begin paying subsequent delinquent taxes on outstanding tax sale certificates.
December  
January
  • Elderly & Disabled Tax Credit and Rent Reimbursement forms become available. Individuals can apply between January 1 and June 1.
February  
March
  • Second half property taxes due March 1, delinquent after March 31, unless that day falls on Saturday or Sunday, then delinquent after first business day in April.
April
  • Second half property taxes delinquent as of April 1, unless March 31 deadline was a Saturday or Sunday, then taxes not delinquent until 2nd business day in April. Interest accrues at the rate of 1.5% per month (rounded to nearest dollar - $1 minimum).
May
  • May 1 - Tax Sale Notices are mailed to owners with outstanding taxes.
  • May 15 - Tax sale investors may begin paying subsequent delinquent taxes on outstanding tax sale certificates.
June
  • June 1 - Elderly & Disabled Tax Credit Claims are due, unless County Treasurer has extended deadline until September 30.
  • 3rd Monday - Annual Tax Sale is held at 10:00 a.m.
